Safari Portal's MCP server lets ChatGPT securely read your Safari Portal data. This article walks you through the ChatGPT-specific setup, step by step.
👉 Note: This setup only works in the latest ChatGPT desktop app. It will not work using ChatGPT in a browser. This feature also only works with ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Education accounts. It does not work with ChatGPT GO or Free accounts.
Before You Begin
- Make sure you are using the latest version of the ChatGPT desktop app. Check the dropdown next to ChatGPT in the top left corner. If Codex appears as an option, you're on a version that supports this setup.
- You need Developer Mode turned on in ChatGPT's Browser settings. Step 2 below walks you through this.
Step 1: Get Your Safari Portal Connection URL
- In Safari Portal, go to Settings.
- Select Integrations.
- Scroll to AI Assistants.
- Click Manage.
- In the Connected AI assistants window, copy the URL you choose to use.
Step 2: Turn On Developer Mode in ChatGPT
- In the ChatGPT desktop app, open Settings.
- Under Integrations, click Browser.
- Scroll to the bottom to the Developer Mode section.
- Turn on the Enable Full CDP Access toggle.
⚠️ Note: ChatGPT shows a warning tag next to this toggle, "Elevated risk." It says this lets ChatGPT inspect and control sensitive browser internals that may put your data at risk. This is expected. Safari Portal's own connection still asks you to approve permissions separately, later in this process.
Step 3: Add Safari Portal as a Custom MCP Server
- In the ChatGPT desktop app, open Settings.
- Under Integrations, click Plugins.
- Click the Add dropdown in the top right corner.
- Click Add MCP server.
- Under Name, type Safari Portal MCP.
- IMPORTANT: Under Type, switch from STDIO to Streamable HTTP.
- Under URL, paste the URL you copied in Step 1.
- Leave Bearer token env var and Headers blank.
- Click Save.
📌 Note: The connection will not work unless you switch the Type to Streamable HTTP.
Step 4: Authenticate the Connection
- In Settings, under Integrations, click Plugins.
- Click the MCPs tab.
- Find the server you added under Servers.
- Click Authenticate.
- This opens Safari Portal's Authorize Access page in your browser.
- Review the permissions. Check any optional boxes for write access, like Files, Contacts, or Tasks, if you want to allow those.
- Click Authorize.
- You'll see a message that says "Authentication complete. You may close this window." Close the window and return to ChatGPT.
