How do I connect Safari Portal to ChatGPT as a custom MCP server?
Turn on Developer Mode and add Safari Portal as a custom connector in ChatGPT Business.

Safari Portal's MCP server lets ChatGPT securely read your Safari Portal data. This article walks you through the ChatGPT-specific setup, step by step.

👉 Note: This feature only works with ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Education accounts. It does not work with ChatGPT GO or Free accounts.

Before You Begin

  • You need Account Admin access in Safari Portal to generate a connection.
  • You need Developer Mode turned on in ChatGPT. Step 2 below walks you through this.
  • If you have not connected an AI assistant to Safari Portal before, see Connect Safari Portal to your AI assistant (MCP Beta) for the general overview.

Step 1: Get Your Safari Portal Connection URL

  1. In Safari Portal, go to Settings.
  2. Select Integrations.
  3. Scroll to AI Assistants.
  4. Click Connect.
  5. In the Connected AI assistants window, copy the URL under MCP Server URL, or if you're an Account Admin who manages more than one separate Safari Portal account, copy the URL under URL for this account only instead.

Step 2: Turn On Developer Mode in ChatGPT

  1. Open Settings in your ChatGPT account.
  2. Click Plugins.
  3. Click Developer Mode, near the bottom of the list.
  4. This opens the Security and Login page. Find the Developer Mode section.
  5. Turn on the Developer Mode toggle.

⚠️ Note: ChatGPT shows a warning tag next to this toggle, "ELEVATED RISK." It says turning this on lets you add unverified connectors that could change or delete data. This is expected. Safari Portal's own connection still asks you to approve permissions separately, later in this process.

Step 3: Add the Connector

  • In Plugins, look for a way to add a new one. This may show as a plus button in the top right, next to Search plugins, or as an option like Add New Plugin, depending on your version of ChatGPT. Click it.
  • In the New Plugin window, fill in:
    • Icon (optional). You can skip this. ChatGPT will use a placeholder icon if you don't add one.
    • Name. Type Safari Portal.
    • Description (optional). A short line works, like "Connects ChatGPT to Safari Portal data."
    • Connection. Leave it set to Server URL.
    • Server URL field. This is the most important field in this step. This is where you'll add the connection URL from Safari Portal, the one from Step 1. Go back to Settings → Integrations → AI Assistants → Connect in Safari Portal, copy the URL, then paste it here.

📌 Note: Safari Portal gives you two URLs in that window. Use MCP Server URL to connect this AI tool to your Safari Portal data. If you're an Account Admin who manages more than one separate Safari Portal account, use URL for this account only instead, since it connects just this one account, alongside any others you manage.

    • Authentication. Look for an option called OAuth, and select it if it isn't already chosen. This is the option that works with Safari Portal. Depending on your version of ChatGPT, this may show as a dropdown already set to OAuth by default, or as a choice you need to select yourself.
    • Check the box: I understand and want to continue.
    • Click Create.

Step 4: Authorize

  • A new screen appears: Add Safari Portal to ChatGPT. Click Sign in with Safari Portal.
  • This opens Safari Portal's own Authorize Access page.
  • Review what ChatGPT will be able to read. Check any optional boxes for write access, like Contacts or Tasks, if you want to allow those.
  • Click Authorize.

📌 Note: You may briefly see a "failed to connect" message right after this. Don't worry, that's just a timing hiccup. Check the Plugins list in the next step. If Safari Portal shows up there, the connection worked.

  • You will return to ChatGPT. Safari Portal now appears in your Plugins list.

Confirmation

  • To confirm the connection worked, click into Safari Portal on the Plugins list. Look for Connected on, with a real date. That confirms it.
  • You can also confirm from the Safari Portal side. Go to Settings, then Integrations, then AI Assistants, then Connect. Check the Connected assistants list at the bottom.
